The essence of the Pilates technique is to simultaneously lengthen and strengthen the body and have complete, conscious control over it. This results in co-ordinated physical and mental health. Pilates develops the body uniformly, corrects poor postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit.
The Pilates technique was developed by Joseph Pilates. Joseph was born to a working class family in Germany in 1880. He was a frail, sickly child suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever.
However rather than being overcome by these physical restrictions he became obsessed with improving his physical condition and body image. He became an accomplished gymnast, boxer and circus performer. He also studied Eastern philosophies, such as Yoga and Karate, which are evident in the Pilates exercises we use today
As with Eastern exercise programmes Pilates shares the training of the mind to control the body. It provides a refreshing workout because as you have to concentrate so fully, you are relieved of worrying about all the other things that are happening in your life.
The ideal Pilates thought we should all strive for is "the enjoyment of physical well-being, mental calm and spiritual peace". These three factors underline the essence of his technique.
Well ahead of his time he noticed a clear connection between poor posture, sedentary lifestyles and ill health, and went on to devote his life to developing his technique. He treated each person who came to him individually and designed his method to be taught on a one-to-one personal trainer basis.
That's an advantage that can still be enjoyed by practising Pilates nowadays. Although you maybe exercising in a small group your instructor will be adjusting and tailoring each exercise to your specific body type and capabilities.
The emphasis is on quality of movement not quantity.
By performing the exercises only a few times but very precisely, new nerve pathways are formed to the brain and once formed they are there for use all the time. Ultimately your body will be able to use its muscles more efficientlyto support itself in everyday life.
Pilates called his method "contrology" to highlight his unique approach of using the mind to master the muscles. What this method teaches you to do is focus, practising it helps to settle your mind, enabling you to achieve your purpose and this skill can be applied to any area of your life.
Please note Pilates is not a medical treatment and should not be practised if suffering from an acute injury, severe back pain or slipped disc. Please consult your Doctor to have appropriate treatment for acute conditions and to get his agreement before commencing classes.
